Individual Mandate Upheld as Tax

In a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court upheld the Obamacare individual mandate.  Chief Justice Roberts wrote the majority opinion, with justices Kennedy, Scalia, Thomas and Alito dissenting.

With only a cursory glance at the syllabus of the decision, it appears conservatives won their argument that the Congress does not have power to force us to buy product, but the majority reasoned that the penalty for not buying health insurance is simply a tax.  Because Congress clearly has authority to tax, the mandate was ruled Constitutional.

The responsibility therefore rests on the people to remove from power those elected officials who supported this monstrous law, and to elect those who would repeal it.  Our opportunity is this November.  I call upon you to heighten your commitment to see this through.  Support candidates not just with your vote, but with your time, effort, money, and word-of-mouth referral.  Signs in your yard or windows, and bumper stickers on your  car are all useful demonstrations that you support those who would repeal this law.  Freedom is worth having to scrape gum off your car later.

Mourn our temporary loss, then commit to the long-term victory through action.

Bastrop County Republican Party
